About

Brunch and the City–Explore DC with a Hill native rediscovering her home town.

I was born and raised in DC (yes, within the actual city lines, not the ‘burbs), moved to New York City for college, and moved back here in 2002 to figure out my career path…or more like trying to figure out what that means.  I was a communications major with a focus in journalism and photography, two things that are still passions of mine, but also two things that were not leading to a paying job in 2002. After coming back to DC my career path took a number of turns and 12 years later I am running my own digital PR ad marketing practice, Claudia Holwill Marketing, working in the city I have grown to love so much.

When I’m not working or brunching, I am fixing up an old row house on Capitol Hill, writing for The Hill is Home, traveling, spending time with family and friends…Yeah, I’ll stop there since this is starting to sound like a profile on a dating site.

Browse around, leave some comments, feel free to follow me on Twitter, Instagram or Pinterest, see my recommendations on FourSquare, or send me an email asking for brunch recommendations or suggesting brunch spots for me to review!

  8. Claudia — Is the 14-year old dog my friend Moseby? If so, please give him a huge hug. I lived in the basement apartment across the alley from your parents’ garage door. I had several different Great Danes (including the 3-legged puppy, Jake). If this is you, please also say HI to your mother and father for me!

  9. Yes! Good memory! Although I hadn’t updated that in some time — he was turning 16 this month but recently passed away. We had a lot of great years with him!

  10. Hi Claudia – great site and reviews! I’m also a native Washingtonian who left DC for school in NYC. I moved right back to jump into public affairs/PR and my hobby is also checking out great food places in the area. Lots in common! Keep it up and I cant wait to read more!

  11. If you are a fan of pancakes, you must try Mrs. K’s restaurant in Upper Marlboro, MD. Although they do not have a brunch per se, they do serve breakfast all day. The blueberry pancakes are to die for. They melt in your mouth and are not heavy. There are real blueberries running through each cake and not the kind you find in good ol’ Krusteez pancake batter.

Mrs. K’s restaurant is connected to a motel that has a lot of history going back prior to civil rights. The young lady that is part owner cooks alot of great food with love along with her staff. The atmosphere is intimate and cozy with a tv. It is a restaurant that serves American fare and leaves the grease smell on you so that everyone knows you have been to Mrs. K’s. The contact information is:
    (301) 885-5001
    5909 Crain Highway
    Upper Marlboro, MD 20772

I hope you enjoy it and convey your enjoyment of the food on your blog so everyone else can benefit.
