My brunch at the Chesapeake Room did not start out well. It was a cold and rainy morning, my friend who was meeting me was running late, and I was on the verge of passing out from hunger — I had gone to the gym when I woke up but not eaten anything after since I was rushing through a few errands before spending the day at the baseball game. I asked the waitress if I could have some bread or a biscuit while I waited for my friend to join me and got the response “We don’t really do carbs.” Um, half of the menu is sandwiches. She took pity and brought me some bread, which was beyond stale. Maybe the good bread was being saved for those carb-less sandwiches? I didn’t bother to find out. Thankfully things turned around once my friend finally made it and we ordered food.
Despite the rocky start, everything on the menu appealed to me, and not just because I was hungry enough to eat my chair. There was an open-faced poached egg sandwich on grilled ciabatta, with goat cheese, heirloom tomatoes and smoked trout roe vinaigrette. And the Chesapeake Egg Sandwich — scrambled eggs, with white cheddar, house sausage and spiced tomato jam. There is also local salsa with eggs “your way,” a seafood omelet, mountain cheese omelet, steak and eggs, and shrimp and grits. I ordered the wild mushroom omelet, which was quite tasty with wild mushrooms, Shenandoah cheddar and herbs.
If you’re not in the mood for seafood and eggs, there are also several sandwiches to choose from: the bison burger, oyster po’ boy, barbecue grilled steak sandwich, and the house smoked chicken salad sandwich.
The most appealing thing about the Chesapeake Room, in my opinion, is the large covered patio, which offers very comfortable seating. And according to the girls at Bitches Who Brunch, the patio is also dog-friendly, which is always an added bonus on a nice day.
